Encouraging Teachers to W.A.I.T Before Engaging Students In Next Generation Science Standards STEAM Activities

چکیده
Effective art integration in K-12 curricula has clear benefits for classroom teachers (i.e. student achievement on standardized tests, student engagement, improving critical thinking). This paper proposes a framework based off of Claudia Cornett's levels of art integration. Teaching With About and In Through (WAIT) the arts can serve as a model for teachers who want to transform their science lesson to include art integration. Author/Artist Bio Dr. Kuhn is an assistant professor at the University of Northern Iowa where he teaches elementary science methods and elementary curriculum theory courses. Prior to his appointment in higher education he was a classroom teacher for 15 years and in 2012 was awarded the Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching (PAEMST), the highest award that can be bestowed on a math or science classroom teacher in the United States.

Using Creativity from Art and Engineering to Engage Students in Science
STEAM education, referring to integrated Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics, is a contemporary buzzword that is popular in many schools. In particular, many elementary school teachers who have been tasked to incorporate STEM teaching, because of the requirements of the Next Generation Science Standards, attempt to apply the arts in their science curriculum because they feel ...
متن کاملDesigning Computer-Supported Complex Systems Curricula for the Next Generation Science Standards in High School Science Classrooms
We present a curriculum and instruction framework for computer-supported teaching and learning about complex systems in high school science classrooms. This work responds to a need in K-12 science education research and practice for the articulation of design features for classroom instruction that can address the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) recently launched in the USA. We outline...
متن کاملUsing Topic Modeling to Assess Middle School Science Discourse based on Next Generation Science Standards
In this paper we apply natural language understanding and topic modeling methods to create an instructional tool for assessing science discourse in interactive multimedia presentations that are created, shared and discussed by students. The resulting assessment prototype will enable teachers to follow student discourse in real time, to understand gaps in student learning, and to improve teachin...
متن کاملThe Engaged Microbiologist: Bringing the Microbiological Sciences to the K-12 Community.
Exposing K-12 students to cutting edge science that impacts their daily lives can bring classroom lessons to life. Citizen-science projects are an excellent way to bring high-level science to the classroom and help satisfy one of the cornerstone concepts of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), "engaging in practices that scientists and engineers actually use." This can be a daunting ta...
متن کاملWho Is Doing the Engineering, the Student or the Teacher? The Development and Use of a Rubric to Categorize Level of Design for the Elementary Classroom
Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professional development for K–5 teachers often includes engineering design as a focus. Because engineering applications provide perspective to both teachers and their students in terms of how mathematic and scientific principles are employed to solve real-world problems (Baine, 2004; Roden, 1997), there is great interest in using enginee...
